The Hank Drum (Hank) is derived from the Hang Drum (pronounced Hung), which is a melodious percussive steel musical instrument developed in Switzerland in 2000.
Obtaining a Hang Drum requires getting on a long waiting list, then flying to Bern Switzerland to pick one up, plus an expensive price tag. In 2006 the Hang Makers stopped shipping instruments directly and halted sales through retailers. Prices on internet auctions have been exceptionally high due to an increased demand since 2006 and a reduction in supply due to changes in the manufacture and distribution.
Gez Clancy was exposed to the Hang Drum in January 2008. He has since conducted some research and discovered he could not afford to buy one. He did some further research and found the Hank, an instrument invented by Dennis Havlena. Dennis has posted full instructions on how to make the Hank Drum online.
Gez promptly went out and made his own Hank, which he proudly showed his friends. The response to his Hank was extraordinary, resulting in so many orders he was overwhelmed. In fact, there is so much interest it has now evolved to him selling them online.
Gez’s purpose is to make the Hank as affordable as possible for everyone, which is why he is only selling them online and not through retailers. Gez encourages everyone to make their own Hank, but will sell them to those who cannot make them or do not have the time or inclination.
Gez has made many Hanks with each one better than the last. He is extremely pedantic with tuning them as a Hank out of tune, is not a Hank Drum at all! They are available in any key and most scales.
Price of the Hank Drum
The Hank is $250, which includes a stand and sticks (refer pictures below). Postage is an extra $20, unless interstate which is $40.
Hanks are available polished or painted, either in one colour or two. One colour painted Hanks are an extra $10, or two colours an extra $20. We recommend painting them as polished ones will slowly rust if left outside. Plus, they look beautiful painted and are available in most colours.
Gez will not start building your Hank until he receives full payment. A tax invoice will be sent to you upon payment. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for the Hank to be made and delivered. This will vary depending on demand.
If you are buying a pre made Hank, it will be shipped to you as soon as full payment has been received (unless out of stock).
